The COVID-19 crisis has put many low-income students and families at risk of being left behind and has accelerated the need for comprehensive digital equity and Internet adoption programs to support them. Lift Zones are located across New Mexico in Comcast’s service areas including Albuquerque, Farmington, Las Cruces, Santa Fe, Silver City, and more.
The initiative provides free hotspot connectivity, and access to hundreds of hours educational and digital skills content to help families and site coordinators navigate online learning. Lift Zones complement Comcast’s Internet Essential program, which, since 2011, has helped connect more than 10 million low-income people to the Internet at home.
“Transforming two of our YDI centers into Lift Zones has made a huge difference in the lives of students we serve. Many of the kids who comes to YDI either don’t have internet at home or they can’t study at home and need somewhere safe to go. We’re so glad to be able to work with Comcast to give our students a safe, clean, and connected space where they can stay in school even when schools are closed.”
– Robert Chavez, CFO/COO, Youth Development, Inc
The donation is part of Project UP, Comcast’s $1 billion commitment to reach 50 million people over the next 10 years with the tools, resources, and skills needed to succeed in a digital world.
